mod_ssl problem

I can't seem to get mod_ssl working and I don't see
why. I'm using apache 1.2.6 and libapache-mod-ssl
2.8.7. I modified httpd.conf per instructions,
including adding the cut-and-paste info. I then ran
mod-ssl-makecert as root in the /etc/apache directory.
I got some errors when I tried to make a test cert, so
I made a real certificate and it proceeded without
errors. I then stopped and restarted apache. When I
type:

openssl s_client -connect localhost:443 -state -debug

it seems to start okay but ends with:

SSL_connect:error in SSLv2/v3 read server hello A
5664:error:140770FC:SSL
routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unknown
protocol:s23_clnt.c:460:

I then get this message in my access log:

127.0.0.1 - - [25/Jun/2002:11:06:54 -0400]
"\x80z\x01\x03\x01" 501 - "-" "-"

and this message in my error log:

[Tue Jun 25 11:06:54 2002] [error] [client 127.0.0.1]
Invalid method in request €z`b`

I don't know if it matters, but instead of a FQDN I'm
just using an IP number when creating the certificate.

Any help is much appreciated.
