Hey Glen,I've got the same setup, and have successfully built and run K7-optimized kernels in the past.
If you continue encountering problems w/ 2.4.18, your AC '97 audio device *is* supported with 2.2 kernels starting with 2.2.19 (I believe you mentioned you had 2.2.20 installed?), though the quality is not as good as the 2.4 incarnation.
