It's not just the lights that make externals better, though that's a
contributing factor in what makes internal modems a bitch.  Added safety
against some line anomolies and they're fast to set up.  Even faster if
you didn't have an internal modem already to open the case and yank...

Never go with internal modems if you can at all avoid it.  They'll fail
you badly some day.

External modems are gauranteed to work with Linux in the most painless
way possible.  Being external isn't sufficient to be a quality modem,
but it is a requirement.
