Type "mount". Is the partition that /var/log on mounted read-only? If it
is, check the partition's entry in /etc/fstab. You can edit fstab to
change how the partition is mounted.

The only place that I can think of would not work if /var/log is on a
read-only partition (/var/log/dmesg, or maybe /var/log/messages).
