I buy rtl8139.o cards for as low as USD6.00 not counting s/h. The 8139
circuitry is embedded in some Biostar M7VKQ mobos I am using as well. They
are not high performance cards - probably better suited in for use in a
workstations. I use them in servers that are performance limited by a 56Kb
WAN connections. I use an older version of the driver for
successful operation in the Biostar M7VKQ mobo (true for both on-board and
PCI add-on). Compiling drivers is not hard to do.
http://www.scyld.com/page/support/network/ has all the details you need. My
experience is derived from having built 9 systems based on home rolled 2.2.14
kernels. I can report that one of my machines with a PCI 8139 successfully
worked with 2.4.x and related drivers.
