Yes, had this happen when certain screensavers would pop up.  It was a
laptop with radeon chip using XFree86 4.1.x from woody/sid.  I am sure
more than just xscreensaver could trigger the lockup, but the star wars
one would always do it.

I solved the problem by changing to the framebuffer (vesa works too)
driver and am waiting for Xfree86 4.2.  Try vesa or framebuffer and see
if you still have the lockups.  Or use Xfree86 4.2-- radeon supprt is
supposed to be better for certain chipsets.
