INBOX = /var/mail/<user>
mailboxes in $HOME
(btw this last one can be a cause of slowdowns too. If you have a lot of
files in your home directory, it will try and open each one to see if it
is a mailbox. There are workarounds on both the client and server sides.)
Will it handle INBOX as

Not without patching and recompilation.

This is actually a client issue. In pine you can add /ssl/novalidate-cert
to the name of the mailbox. I don't know if mutt has an equivalent.
