When the time came for me to see this particular light, and establish
the mail setup you so aptly describe, all my explorations of Mozilla led
me to give up on it, as it *insists* on fetching email from a pop/imap
server (at least for versions up to 0.9.8, I think).

Setting up fetchmail for fetching outside mail, sendmail (or exim) for
sending and receiving email, procmail for incoming mail distribution,
and sylpheed as a mail reader, was the answer in my case. Importing
Mozilla folders (mbox format) into Sylpheed's MH maildirs is quite an
easy process, done from within sylpheed.
