starting X hangs system kernel-image 2.4.18.4 and .5
hi
starting x or gdm on my new kernel image hangs the system... no response
to any stimulus... reboot needed.
the XF86config-4 file works perfectly with 2.2.20 custom or kernel-image.
startx 2>xlog leaves no trace.
/var/log/XFree86.0.log is created. it runs to the end. the only error
reported is:
(==) MGA(0): Write-combining range (0xe3000000,0x1000000)
(--) MGA(0): 64 DWORD fifo
(==) MGA(0): Default visual is TrueColor
(II) MGA(0): [drm] bpp: 32 depth: 24
(II) MGA(0): [drm] Sarea 2200+664: 2864
[drm] failed to load kernel module "mga"
(II) MGA(0): [drm] drmOpen failed
(EE) MGA(0): [drm] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.
(II) MGA(0): Using 2252 lines for offscreen memory.
(II) MGA(0): Using XFree86 Acceleration Architecture (XAA)
i believe that this is ok, since mga is already loaded. this same error
occurs under 2.2.20 and everything works ok.
visually, after startx, you see a flash of startup go by and then the
screen goes to black.
both mga and agpgart are installed.
any clues or suggestion would be most welcome.
thank you
dave
