gcc howto

Hi,
My aim is to have a Debian system running gcc 3.0.4 and libc6 2.2.5
with kernel 2.4.18. (Was running potato r0 gcc 2.95.2 libc 2.1.3)
First I've done the update by apt-get. Then I have manually compiled
(against libc6-2.1.3) and installed gcc 3.0.4 with default directory (--prefix=/usr/local) and meet the requirements for a 2.4.18 kernel.
Kernel was then upgraded to 2.4.18
Now I also compile and installed glibc-2.2.5 from tarball and installed by make install which puts them to /usr/local/lib and run ldconfig.

When I try to re-compile gcc 3.0.4 against libc6 2.2.5, gcc refuses to
run. How to get them work together ?

   Thanks.
