I've made the same configuration on my desktop and my notebook:
/dev/cdrom and /dev/hdc are in cdrom group
I'm in audio and cdrom groups

On my notebook I can rip and play cd's but on my desktop I can only
rip cd's but not play then.
I've tried xmms, grip, xfreecd with no result.
I think all those player just play the cd and expect the sound goes direct to
the sound board through a wire, but on my desktop I don't have that connection (I've
assembled it myself).
Maybe that is your/our problem.
