On most laptops that's up to your BIOS.  You'll need to turn on screen
scaling for text.

Basically, your display is a higher resolution than text mode requires. 
If the laptop allocates 1 LCD pixel per pixel in your text mode, it
doesn't fill the screen, so you get the big black borders.  If you tell
the laptop to scale the text, it will do a bit of scaling and dithering
math and enlarge the text to fill the screen.
