check /var/log//XFree86.0.log for error messages.

You may need to add HorizSync and VertRefresh rates to Section
"Monitor".

To reconfigure:
dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

or you could try a non-debian way with:
XFree86 -configure

At end of XF86Config-4 you may want to add:
Section "DRI"
        Mode    0666
EndSection
