If you want both gpm and X working, try using /dev/gpmdata as the
mouse device in the XF86Config-4 file, and run gpm in repeat mode
(look in /etc/gpm.conf).

For my Logitech USB mouse I have in /etc/gpm.conf

device=/dev/input/mice
responsiveness=
repeat_type=raw
type=imps2
append=""
sample_rate=

and the running gpm is

/usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/input/mice -t imps2 -Rraw
