You might want to check your locale. Start with the output for
'locale', and set LANG=C, unset all else. See if this changes anything.
Are you seeing _nothing_ or something that looks like dashed-out
rectangles of text, e.g., lines of :
[][][][][] [][] [][][][][][][] [][][][][] [][][][][][][] [][][]
[][] [][][][][] [][][] [][][][][] [][][][] [][][][][][][] [][]
[][][][][][][] [][][][][][] [][] [][][] [][][][][] [][][]
...which turned to to be a font-encoding issue. Big problem with X11
back in August/September last year.
