Are the processors Intel or AMD?
Are they Pentium I, II, III, IV, Celeron, Duron, or Athlon?

(I think I've got them all correct, except for the celeron)
Go with kernel 2.4.18 instead. The latest is (almost) always better.
I've got 2.4.18 running on both my machines.
