kpackage works well as an APT frontend, too. Have a look at its
settings menu, choose the "package types" tab and enable "APT:
Debian". (This is preferable to selecting the other available option
called "DPKG: Debian", because the latter one will try to read package
lists directly and build its own package trees instead of relying on
APT's infinite intelligence.)
