Dear Simon,
thanks for your reaction. I realised that I was using the wrong file and
XF86Config-4 actually had 'mga_hal' where it should have had 'mga'
(which is almost the same problem for which you gave the solution :) ).
Please ignore the attachments of the previous message: I made some
progress and my problem has shifted back to the one I originally wanted to ask
this list about (I made matters worse in trying to solve it and got a bit
desperate,
so I was too fast in asking for help here). The error now is
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
I realise half the newbies stumble upon 'no screens found', but for some reason
the explanation is always different and was unable to locate a solution in the
archives. So, for some reason I am unable to define screens with a usable
configuration.
Below is /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and the log startx produces now.
