hi all,
i have this shiny dell latitude c610 laptop sitting here, and it's
giving me a headache...
i am running X on it (woody, version 4.1.0-14, xserver-xfree86). it
has an unsupported radeon mobility card (drivers only in 4.2.0), but
it's said to work with the vesa module for XFree86-4.1.0, and it kind
of does. here are the relevant parts of the config, and the full
XF86Config-4 file may be found here[1].
1. ftp://ftp.madduck.net/pub/temp/x-signal4/XF86Config-4.gz
Section "Device"
Identifier "vesa"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "c610lcd"
HorizSync 31.5-90
VertRefresh 59-75
Option "DPMS"
Modeline "1400x1050" 184 1400 1464 1656 1960 1050 1051 1054 1100
+HSync +VSync
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "screen"
Device "vesa"
Monitor "c610lcd"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1400x1050"
EndSubSection
EndSection
at semi-regular intervals, X will just die with this message in the log
(/var/log/xdm.log):
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 4. Server aborting
it seems that this will only happen when the machine is left idling,
because it has not yet happened to me whilst working locally on the
X desktop. then again, i haven't really spent a lot of time on that
machine other than through SSH yet...
the full xdm.log is available at[2], and the XFree86.0.log file here[3]
2. ftp://ftp.madduck.net/pub/temp/x-signal4/xdm.log.gz
3. ftp://ftp.madduck.net/pub/temp/x-signal4/XFree86.0.log.gz
please share your wisdom, this is *really* annoying.
