Does the screen look like this:
http://netenv.sourceforge.net/netenv.gif ?

If so, you have netenv installed on your laptop.  'apt-get remove
netenv' should take care of it.

Make sure your /etc/network/interfaces file is configured for dhcp and
you should be ready to go.
