1) If you're running stable or testing and want a newer version
2) Compiling for your processor/with particular optimisations
3) You want different options passed to the configure script, e.g. a KDE look
rather than a QT look, a GTK interface. Generally as a maintainer I will
select a minimal number of configure options so the package doesn't depend on
too many other programs.
4) You might need to make a tiny tweak to the code
5) it feels good to compile programs yourself
