If I were you, I set /etc/inittab and make system shutoff by pressing
CTRL-ALT-DEL. s/-r/-h/

I am guessing he has CONSOLE access.

Your dad maybe younger and flexible about learning new thing than me
but why make him learn too much.

CTRL-ALT-DEL to auto power off and power swich to reboot :)
