Custom 2.4.17 kernel freezes new sid box

Hi Guys,
I recentley installed SID on my box by doing a dist-upgrade to a minimum install of woody. I compiled a 2.4.17 kernel using options I've always used before with success. This time, however, when booting with the new kernel, my machine locks cold right before the login prompt. I see the init scripts start cron, and right after that it freezes. I have to do a cold reset to bring it back. I can still boot fine with the 2.2.20 kernel that was installed by woody, but I'd like to run a 2.4 series kernel. Anyone have any advice on how I can trouble shoot this, or what might be causing it to happen?

PC: 1.4GHz Athlon, 512MB RAM, 2x40GB Seagate HD, Iwill KT133A chipset MB, Lucent wireless PCMCIA card w/ PCI adapter, SB Live, GeForce2 GTS.

Kernel: The defaults, plus PCMCIA/Cardbus, USB, devfs, ext3, apm, Nvidia kernel driver, ALSA.

If you guys need anything else, I'd be happy to post it.

Thanks!

Steven
