dpkg error code (1)

I looked through the archives and saw this a coupla times, but didn’t see any real answers.  I have an unmet dependency (libopenldap-runtime), but that doesn’t look to be the problem.  When called from apt-get dpkg is giving me  Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)”.  full screenshot is below.

I saw a thread that pointed to this bug:  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?archive=no\&bug=129807

but, how do I install the ncurses upgrade if my installer, dpkg, isn’t working?!?!?

sorry if this is dumb, I’m a noob to debian.

thx for the help,

Baroof
