I have used this successfully. IIRC, the repeat_type wasn't
set properly to work OOTB for an IntelliMouse-compatible mouse.
GPM and X config file snippets included below.
== /etc/gpm.conf BEGIN ====================
device=/dev/psaux
responsiveness=
repeat_type=raw
type=imps2
append=""
sample_rate=
== /etc/gpm.conf END ======================
== /etc/X11/XFree86Config-4 BEGIN =========
...
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/gpmdata"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
...
== /etc/X11/XFree86Config-4 END ===========
The above works for me. HTH.
