I would install without X and Gnome. Then try to install X but not
Gnome, using the task list. (I think it was called tasksel). If that
doesn't work, try the dselect program, and install the relevant
X-windows packages. If dselect does not help, try

apt-get install xfree86-common xserver-s3 twm xfonts-75dpi

I think that those packages will depend on everything else you need to
run X on a standalone workstation.

The last resort, though you should not need to use it, is use dpkg -i
[package-name]. But that by-passes most of the convenience that
Debians package-managing system is designed to give you. (I used it
when I first installed Debian in 1999 and had a bad connection to the
internet).

To summarize the install methods ranked by user-friendliness:

tasksel
dselect
apt-get
dpkg
