I suggest looking again at MiniDisc -- specifically the new Sony NET-MD
players.  56 hour battery life, long-play mode (80/160/320 minutes on a
disc) and excellent anti-shock (my Sony MD has never skipped).

Remember - MP3 is evil!  :)
