Get some old DOS disk and go to ftp://ftp.3com.com/pub/NIC/3c509/
Thre grab the 3c509x1.exe (or 3c509x2.exe? forgot). Run them in DOS
to decompress them. You'll see that one of them will have a 
config program. You can use it to test/setup/read config from all
3c509 cards you have..

Alternatively, grab the 3c5x9 package from stable (it's only in stable :(
http://packages.debian.org/stable/net/3c5x9utils.html

You can use it to check if you have your card set up correctly. Please
note that it should not be set as a PnP card. It will cause problems.
