create a file of any name you like in /etc/devfs/conf.d and then add lines
like the following (change the device to the correct one of course)
REGISTER ide/host0/bus1/target1/lun0/cd CFUNCTION GLOBAL symlink
$devname dvd
UNREGISTER ide/host0/bus1/target1/lun0/cd CFUNCTION GLOBAL unlink dvd
and then run update-devfsd
Also add a file in /etc/modutils with a lines like the following
# Link my dvd drive
alias /dev/dvd ide-cd
and then run update-modules
At least this is my setup - I forget quite why I did everything I did right
now but it works.
