i reccomend installing the cups-lpd portion, and setup lpd
on the remote host. i did this on the weekend. i have CUPS
running on freebsd 4.4(tested it on debian 3.0 too), and
have lpd running on a sun ultra 1(solaris), debian 2.2, and
2 debian 3.0 machines and they can all print.

cupsys-client seems to be the package you want. and
setup /etc/printcap on the remote systems like:
lp|Remote printer entry:\
         :lp=:\
         :rm=printer.mydomain.com:\
         :rp=lp:\
         :sd=/var/spool/lpd/remote:\
         :mx#0:\
         :sh:
