wrestling with dselect

in the past i tried to learn lyx and latex, was interested, so thought i would try again ( after reading some thread from debian list on word perfect, if i may say so, i have known many many people to be very attached to that program too! )

lyx depenends on libforms
libforms dep xpm4g
xpm4g conflicts with xlib

here is where the obvious problem occurs, is there a way to get lyx without the nightmare of removing xlib?

is there an undo in dselect? - sed is what i have been using on the /var/lib/dpkg/status file -- Is this advisable?

any tips would be nice, perhaps i havent read enough of the manual, but i have come along ways just pushing dselect, and i like it

for instance the Q option to force things along, got me tleds after some wrestling
