Any error messages?  Look in /var/log/dmesg or /var/log/syslog.  Since 
syslog is timestamped, look for any entries from when your machine 
booted.  Also, looking thru /proc/pci for mention of 3Com or ethernet 
might help.

Since you are a newbie (and a new one, from the sound of it), a 
pre-packaged distro might help you.  www.libranet.com is based on debian.
