I have a debian machine acting as my home lan server/firewall/gateway.
Initially I ran it without keyboard mouse or monitor without change and it
worked fine. These days it has an old keyboard connected but still no
monitor because I found it useful if I have a problem to come along and plug
a monitor into the back (it sits next to my desktop machine which does have a
monitor and I just switch the cables over) to work on it locally.

Normally I just ssh into it - but if I have a serious problem where sshd
isn't running then I need to get at it directly. I also have xlibs on this
machine so that I can run an xbased editor (fte) through the ssh channel that
I have created. This took a bit of setting up to allow x-forwarding - but
other than that everything has more or less worked straight from the box.
