I also think you should check your .xresources file for leftover items
from any previous installations. I assume you do not want to use kwm for
some reason. I would certainly consider it on any system using kde as
it's primary. If you have ever tried to install Gnome, Enlightenment, or
other display managers such as gdm there may be  entries that should be
cleaned up especially in /.xsession /.xrecources
