Is IceWM actually running ?? What you describe is similar to what
happens if you run X without a window manager. Do you have an "X" mouse
cursor ?? Does it disappear when you "enter" your xterm ?? You can
actually type in the term, but as you say, you don't see the cursor to
realize that you can. If you can, type the executable for IceWM and hit
enter.

If you start X via "startx", does your ~/.xinitrc file have the command
to start up IceWM ??
