we have an adsl connection ---> linux router project box (a hdd-less 486) --->
24 port switching hub ---> +/- 14 boxes: debian, mac, and windows.

you need:

ethernet cards all round
hub (or a switch- much better)
lrp box
cable

you can do it without the lrp router/firewall but....

point out to your family that this would be more secure to them and that
two boxes/one dsl would (probably) not noticeably degrade their performance.

works great for our community access computer lab - all donated
equipment (read mostly obsolete.)
