I've used the Motorola SM56 PCI modem when I was still using
RH 7.0 (though the Motorola said the module's only for RH 7.1)
It works, but it taxes the processor much (I had then a
Pentium 200MHz box with 32MB of RAM). Only minicom sees the
modem then (pppd 2.4.0, kernel 2.4.0). That was early last
year. Since pppd has been updated again as well as the 2.4 kernel,
the Motorola SM56 PCI modem could work better now.

Avoid winmodems at all costs. Better stick with an external modem
- it has complete hardware (no need for software emulation of
significant hardware functions of a modem) thus it won't be an
added burden to your processor.
