Well, although I found a solution a little while ago, I just thought I should do a quick follow-up. The problem I was experiencing with my Sony DSC-P30 Digital Camera was a matter of the specific kernel I was running. Apparently, it worked under 2.4.7 and 2.4.8 (and possibly even 2.4.9) but was somehow broken by 2.4.10. I upgraded my kernel to 2.4.14 (using a simple 'apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.14) and voila! There was my camera, ready for use, and (even better) in full read-write mode. I've been publishing my pictures with it since.
As a small note, it IS just a FAT file system, so storing files temporarily on the camera works great, as well. Slap something on the camera that's too big for a floppy, go to destination machine, connect and transfer. Nice toy!
