failed to build 2.4.16

    Hey people. 

    I just tried to build kernel 2.4.16, but it failed in the link stage. 

drivers/char/char.o(.data+0x46b4): undefined reference to `local symbols in
discarded section .text.exit'
drivers/net/net.o(.data+0x174): undefined reference to `local symbols in
discarded section .text.exit'
make[1]: *** [vmlinux] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.16'
make: *** [stamp-build] Error 2

    Anyone have any idea what's going on?
