Thanks folks.
I was making the symlink to kernel-xyz without using the full path, as
in ln -s filea fileb instead of ln -s /usr/src/filea linux. After
changing that the map error was still there and then I copied the map to
/boot/System.map instead of /boot/map. Then it worked, but I had tried
the second part before, so both of these are necessary: full path and
System.map filename, instead of the default Potato filename of map.
