Not only for newbies:)

Look into dpkg-reconfigure, this will allow all debconf using packages
to reconfigure.  Other packages, like xserver-xfree86 have different
methods to do a basic reconfiguration (search the debian-user archive),
but mostly we read up on the package and go directly to its config files.

On debian based systems this isn't as harsh as it sounds.  All config
files are to be found in /etc (/etc/<package> for bigger packages),
and may have comments in them to help alter them.
