In general, the xdm docs are more or less definitive.  I've played with
a few DMs and found that xdm and wdm did better for XDMCP connections
than others (not sure of GDM, IIRC, KDM didn't cut the mustard).

Note that there's no reason you have to use KDE's DM with KDE.
