I missed the beginning of this thread so if I'm off-topic, apologies.
I've been getting frequent (1/day) lockups since about kernel 2.4.12,
with both ac and regular versions. Latest is 2.4.16. They always happen
when I'm online, and the hdd light always remains on. Other than that, I
have no clue. 

Currently I've gone back to 2.2.20, and no lockups at all today in spite
of quite a lot of time online. But it's too early to be sure that it's
the answer.
