pon: unwanted SIGHUP after connect

I just upgraded my kernel from 2.2.17 to 2.4.9.

Pon used to work; now it works and...immediately hangs up.

Here is the relevant /var/log/messages bit:

Dec 3 20:52:25 finster chat[212]: send (ATDT2223333^M)
Dec 3 20:52:25 finster chat[212]: expect (CONNECT)
Dec 3 20:52:25 finster chat[212]: ^M
Dec 3 20:52:42 finster chat[212]: ATDT2223333^M^M
Dec 3 20:52:42 finster chat[212]: CONNECT
Dec 3 20:52:42 finster chat[212]: -- got it
Dec 3 20:52:42 finster chat[212]: send (\d)
Dec 3 20:52:43 finster pppd[211]: Serial connection established.
Dec 3 20:52:43 finster pppd[211]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
Dec 3 20:52:43 finster pppd[211]: Exit.

And here is my chatscript:

# This chatfile was generated by pppconfig 2.0.5.
# Please do not delete any of the comments. Pppconfig needs them.
#
# ispauth PAP
# abortstring
ABORT BUSY ABORT 'NO CARRIER' ABORT VOICE ABORT 'NO DIALTONE' ABORT 'NO DIAL TONE' ABORT 'NO ANSWER'
# modeminit

# ispnumber
OK-AT-OK ATDT2223333
# ispconnect
CONNECT \d\c
# prelogin
# ispname
# isppassword
# postlogin
# end of pppconfig stuff

Can anybody tell me what's wrong?

Tom
