Do a "apt-get update" then run "apt-get --reinstall install
xfonts-base".  This should get rid of this error and get X running,
provided you don't have other problems.

This is a frequent problem encountered on an upgrade from Potato to
Woody...many other posts on this Mailing Lists.  You might want to scan
back through this month's messages to get a discussion of
this...something about a "munged" alias file, I think.
