I believe someone else has already mentioned the Alcatel Speedtouch USB
(provided by BT/Freeserve, in the UK). This works pretty well with woody
(although, it's very fussy about kernel versions, seemingly). The drivers
provided by Alcatel (along with Axboe's pppoatm kernel patch) have worked
very well for me.

However, that said, it /was/ a pain in the backside to set up, and if I
had a choice as to the hardware I was going to use, it wouldn't be a USB
modem. :)
