If you use pppconfig you should not have to anything else than add the users
in the advanced settings part.
I never added anyone to any groups manually. pppconfig did for me what was
needed.

Are you sure you remembered to save your pppconfig setup before you left
pppconfig?
(I sometimes forget because I find the save part a bit "hidden" in the pppconfig
setup process.)
