I had the same messages on a Debian system that I setup. I thought it was a hardware problem at first so I put another hard drive in with the same result, the same messages. I changed the BIOS settings so that they correctly described the hard drive geometry and it fixed the problem. The hard drive has worked fine since.
I am speaking from experience, not as an 'expert' debian user. I've only been using Debian for a little while and like it but I'm still getting my sea-legs so to speak.
Regards,
Eric
