XFree86 v4.x uses /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

To generate an /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file either run dexconf, or XFree86
-configure. The latter will generate a file in the directory you run it
from. My experience has been that you should first run dexconf to
generate a general (and mostly complete) /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, and
then run XFree86 -configure to see if there are any special options that
your video card can use.

Also, while backported potato packages exist for XFree86 v4.x, I'd
really suggest using woody or sid.
