There is no problem building Emacs 21 from source on potato.  You may
not have all the libs nessecary for all image formats, most likely the
libungif[1] library will be to old.  Emacs can cope just fine without
though.

Just make sure to have either xaw3d or lesstif installed before you
build if you want fancy scrollbars.
